Composer Spotlight
Christian Mechem
Christian Mechem is an emerging composer based in Philadelphia who earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music (composition) at Franklin & Marshall College, graduating in 2019. His solo‑piano cycle Three Omens (2025), dedicated in memory of George Crumb, unfolds in three atmospheric movements and was released in August 2025. Earlier commissions include the orchestral suite Olivia (2020), premiered by the F&M Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, and a chamber duo A Conversation for Two Musicians (2019), published by Alea. Most recently, the Kamratōn Ensemble commissioned The Ghost of a Spring Cocoon, which they premiered during their 2023 Midwest tour. Mechem’s music is quickly gaining attention for its vivid narrative qualities, evocative coloration, and formal clarity.

Inspiring the Next Generation
In August, we had the joy of serving as guest artists at the 15th Annual Summer Piano Institute at the Music School of Delaware in Wilmington. We opened the week with a concert for students and families, featuring new additions to our repertoire: selections from Rachmaninoff’s Morceaux de Quatre Mains, Op. 11, alongside our own transcription of Suita din Dobrogea. The response was overwhelming — the students especially connected with the Romanian folk-inspired suite, which quickly became a favorite.
Throughout the residency, we coached countless duets, guiding young pianists in the art of collaboration, mindfulness, and listening to one another. It was inspiring to watch them grow, not just musically but also in confidence and teamwork.
And of course, our puppy Zeus stole the show, sitting calmly on stage during our concert and charming students throughout the week. Sometimes, the best lessons come not just from the music, but from the joy of sharing the stage together.
